12. Charles
Hamilton Ross was born in Glengarry County, Ontario, Canada in 1868.
He moved to Oakland, California sometime around 1890 and lived at the Railroad
Exchange Hotel. The hotel was owned by Olaf Anderson and his wife
Johanna. Their niece, Josephine, also lived and worked there. She
of course is the same Josephine Anderson that married Charles a few years
later. Olaf eventually sold the hotel, having won the Chinese lottery,
and settled down. Charles and Josephine had a number of children.
Two, Grace and Lillian Wanda, were the eldest and died young. Charles
actual occupation is unknown but he worked at the piers in the area that is now
Jack London Square. He was a poet, although not particularly talented, some
of his works were put to music. One, Gathering
The Roses , became popular during WWI. Some inventions that he
had come up with and which the US Navy turned down included: a glass bottom
boat, a rubber suit and a gun that shoots oil into the looking glass of
submarines. Of course, all three of these were eventually used to some
extent. Photo of Charles Hamilton (1868-1941), Josephine Johanna Anderson
(1878-1960) and daughter. Daughter may either be Lillian or Grace .
