GENEOLOGY NOTES:                              *Go To List of Useful Web Sites*

SOUNDEX CODES:

[The Soundex Machine from the National Archives: http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/soundex/soundex.html

Ship that Christian F. Muller escaped from (survived):
Ship's  Name: City of  Chester
Type: Steamship
Year Built: 1875
Year Sunk: 1888
Cause: Collision
Owner: Oregon Railroad Co. (charter PCSS)
Captain: Wallace, Thomas
Length: 205 feet
Beam: 33 feet
Tonnage: 1106
County: San Francisco

Hmm.. Now we are getting different dates.  One site said it sank in 1888
and this one (about a ship called the Oceanic which collided with the city
of chester) says it sank in 1882...

"With no major mishaps in her history, the Oceanic continued her service
into the 1880s. Unfortunately, no ship seems to escape accidents, and this
went for the Oceanic as well. On August 22, 1882, the ship collided just
off the Golden Gate Bridge with the coastal liner City of Chester, which
sank with a loss of sixteen lives."
