Rev. Edward Gerard
Father Gerard, a native of Reims, Brittany in France, was
the first priest ordained in Arizona on February 2,
1877. He journeyed twice a month by horse and
buggy to the Phoenix missions, fording the Salt River
near Tempe. He is responsible for building two
mission churches in Phoenix. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel
was built near the Salt River in Tempe on March 10,
1861. The Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
was built in Phoenix in 1881.
