ABOUT AHNENTAFEL NUMBERING:
Ahnentafel is the German word for
Ancestor Table. The ahnentafel
chart is a way of presenting a family tree in a compact form. It
starts with a given person and lists his/her ancestors in each
previous generation.
The ahnentafel numbers allow you to
find the father and mother (if
known) and child of any individual listed. Except for the first
person (#1), men are even and women are odd. Add one to a male's
number or subtract one from a female's number to find the spouse.
To find a given person's father,
multiply the ahnentafel number of
the person by two; add one to the father's number to find the
mother's number.
To find the ahnentafel number of a
person's child, divide the
person's number by two; in the case of the mother, throw away the
remainder.
The Ahnentafel Chart also lists the
dates of birth and death, if
known. The number following each name is the record number in the
data base I am using to develop this family history.
Throughout this booklet, identical
names in direct lines have the
traditional Jr., or Roman numerals (II, III, ...). Arabic numerals
(2, 3, 4, ...) distinguish identical names not in direct succession;
for example, nieces or nephews, grandchildren, or a new child in a
family who has been given the name of a deceased brother or sister.
